This week's focus is on argumentative writing and speaking.


On Monday, we will go over the test we did last week. Students are able to make test corrections to make up ½ points for each problem. This is due on Wednesday.  Students must also annotate examples essay that is due on Tuesday.


On Tuesday, students will reflect and develop rubrics on strong evidence, counterclaim, and rebuttal. Students will take quick notes to assist with the rubric. Then they will respond to two peers’ examples in a substantive way. Students who have not done the outline that was due last week will need to email/write their parents and explain why they did not do the assignment and develop a plan to improve. The final copy of the outline is due on Thursday.


On Wednesday, students will practice context for nonfiction on NoRedInk. They have until Monday to complete the assignment. Students will also develop rules for civil discussions to prepare to have a debate on Friday on energy drinks. Students’ test corrections are due this day.  


On Thursday we will pick up where we left on on Wednesday and discuss the rules for civil discussions. Students will need to review notes and outline to prepare for the debate on Friday. The final outline is also due today.  


On Friday, students will work on Friday Free write. Then, students will have a civil discussion.

This week students will be focusing argumentative writing. Students will be able to

  • pull out strong evidence to support claims
  • develop counterclaims with a rebuttal
  • reply in a substantive manner to peers
  • understand argumentative terms

On Monday January 22, 2017 students self reflect on examples of thorough analysis  and replies to peers on written work. Students then will  edit work to reflect excellent examples. If they did not complete work in class, it is  homework and all examples are due on Tuesday 23, 2018. Final work will count as an assessment.


Students will work on argument paragraph template that is due on Thursday 25, 2018 before class.


There is an assessment on “Parts of an Argument” on Friday.

  • Happy New Year Panthers! We are starting of the New Year with goals on how to be a better version of ourselves. Students wrote down these goals and shared them with the table. It is listed as the first page of their notes. We hope to reach our goals by the end of the school year.

  • This year we will be more organized with our notes!  We will go over the new ways to organize our notes. Notes must be organized using a table of context as a guide.Notes must also be labeled with the correct page number. Students must also follow the rules of using cornell notes when needed. The first page of notes are students’ goals. Students must occasionally refer back to this page to make sure they are reaching these goals.

  • Students will be introduced to argumentative writing with key vocabulary terms that we will have a quiz on next week.

  • Students will collect evidence to back up claims to arguments by annotating  articles and organizing evidence in a “pro and con” sheet.

  • Students  will also learn how to give substantive responses to their peers so that they can give feedback that is meaningful and helpful.

December 11- December 15

  • For the final week of quarter two, students will work on the final draft of the research paper.  For this week, we will focus on transitions. Students will revise essay to include transitions.  They need revise and edit the research paper template and write the final draft of the five paragraph research essay. The research paper needs to be in MLA format.

  • Students need to also complete “Claims and Evidence, Claims and Reasons of Body Paragraph, Transitions, and  Revise” on NoRedInk by Wednesday, December 13, 2017

  • Students also need to turn in the vocabulary narrative in Google Classroom by Wednesday, December 13, 2017

.

  • On Wednesday, students will work on the written response of the semester exam.

  • Final day to submit all late work is Thursday, December 14, 2017.

December 4- December 8

 

This week students will write a second draft of the introduction, conclusion, topic sentences, and thesis statement and turn this in before Wednesday at 6:00 a.m. Students will also work on the rough draft of body paragraphs.

  • gather relevant information from multiple sources and avoid plagiarism to do research
  • develop grabbers
  • develop a thesis statement
  • take vocabulary quiz and learn new vocabulary.

On November 15-16 students will take the interim assessment.

November 6- November 9

This week students will be able to…

  • Reasearch and develop research questions
  • Cite sources using MLA format
  • Understand vocabulary while paying attention to root words
  • Develop hooks and a thesis statement for research paper
  • On Wednesday, students will go to the library
  • Free write using correct punctuation and grammar

October 31- November 3

This week students will be able to...
  • take the common assessment on thesis statement
  •   take the vocabulary quiz
  • develop research questions and identify vague words and phrases
  • work on research and MLA format
  • narrow down research topic and research questions 
  •   learn five more vocabulary word and take notes
  •   write vocabulary narrative in schoology and respond to peers.

October 23 - October 26

This week, students will learn new vocabulary and take cornell notes. Students will write a narrative on the vocabulary and post the narrative on schoology later this week. Students will also review how to post a comment on schoology. They started off on an ice breaker activity on schoology and also posted comments to peers. 

Students will also be  introduced to  research topics.  Students will pick a topic introduced in class.

Monday - Students will take pre-assessment.

August 21-25

 This week we worked on "Letter to Self". We did a rough draft and we had three peers edit our work. The last person to edit the draft was YOU. The final draft was due August 25. Final copy was on top, then the draft, then the peer edit paper. We also signed up into google classroom.
