La Monalisa
Grades: 6-7-8- grades
Materials:
• Photocopies or black-lined copies of the painting
• 8” x 11 “ heavy weight drawing paper
• Examples of Modified Mona Lisa
• Printed Mona Lisa coloring page. White paper
Objectives:
1. To become more aware of Expressive painting
2. To become more aware of symmetry of the face.
3. To strive to paint with a symbolism and painting color scheme
4. To become familiar with Leonardo's work of the Mona Lisa
5. Deformation, alteration and symbols
6. Become familiar to discuss your painting, give explanations and reasons of your choices.


Procedure:
Instructions:
1 Decide the theme of your Mona Lisa. How will you change the picture? What props will you use? How will you change the setting?
2 Print out the Mona Lisa coloring page to trace.
3. Trace the parts of the Mona Lisa that will stay the same. For example, you may want to just trace her face and body so that you can draw a different background. Or you may just trace her body and face so you can draw different hair. If you don't have a tracing tool, you can tape your template and blank paper to a window to trace.
4. Add the creative parts to your drawing. Draw lightly in case you need to erase.
5. Use colored pencils or markers to color your Mona Lisa.
6. Copy the steps from PowerPoint and answer the discussion questions?

Discuss a little history concerning Leonardo da Vinci. Ask the children what they think of the Mona Lisa. Why Mona Lisa is so famous? Why did he paint her? Show work of the Modern art. Discuss and explain various colors and symbols. Review shading and tinting techniques. The final product will be a Mona Lisa painted in bold/subjective and deformed with alteration of the face and colors. Develop contrasts, and color the background. Choose and describe the meaning of the symbols used to enrich this project. If time allows you may wish to have them paint or use color pencils and value chart using their desired color they have chosen.
Project: Allow students draw a one inch grid on the photocopies. Draw a grid on the drawing paper (using the same number of squares as on the photocopy). Transfer the image of Mona square by tracing. Renaissance artists were known to use a grid. Change surroundings - Give Mona a new look - new fashion for 21st century. The final product will be a personal interpretation of the Mona Lisa that students will be astonished when they complete. Complete the questionnaire. Table discussion and evaluation.
Alterate: Have students draw their own Mona Lisa. Put her in new surrounding - add local landscape/buildings etc (bring her portrait to the 21st century). Example: have McDonald's in background - have her holding a Big Mac. Mona Lisa parody, cellphones or computers, hats, football helmets, and the other symbols to complete the drawing. Don’t forget to choose the title of your Mona Lisa. Have Fun!
